Snoring and How It Affects You

Snoring has long been part of sleeping for everybody. One can snore occasionally regardless of age bracket whether a baby, a toddler, a teenager, or an adult. This can be caused by a lot of factors. Thus, it creates a sound known as snoring. The sound is caused by air producing vibrations within the nose, mouth and throat. →   Obesity or lack of exercise – Snoring can also be attributed to poor muscle tone in the throat and tongue and also bulky throat tissues.

→   Sleep position – The throat’s flesh tend to relax and block the airway when a person sleeps flat on his back.

→   Medication, alcohol, and smoking – These factors tend to make the tongue and throat muscles become too relaxed leading them to collapse, blocking the airway.

→   Aging – The throat becomes narrower and the throat’s muscle tone decreases when one reaches middle age and continues to deviate as one is getting older.

Snorers are unmistakably sleep-deprived leading to drowsiness, clumsiness, inattentiveness, weight loss, and fatigue. If this is not addressed, extended sleep deprivation will result to headache, nausea, irritability, dry mouth, dizziness, memory lapse and worst of all, hallucinations. Snoring problems should be taken seriously especially by habitual snorers. It is best to face the problem so as to prevent health risk problems linked to chronic snoring.

A condition called sleep apnea is considered ‘the silent killer’. It is potentially life threatening which calls for medical attention as soon as possible. Problems in line with sleep apnea consist of the following:

→   Waking up at night to recuperate breathing (snorer may or may not realize frequent waking from sleep)

→   High blood pressure and heart enlargement (prone to heart attack and stroke)

→    Oxygen-deprived (may lead to diabetes)

→   Sleep-deprived resulting to drowsiness, poor concentration, slow reflexes, heightened risk of accidents

→   More than ten seconds of breathing interruption while sleeping (maybe because of total or partial obstruction of airways)
